The Food and Drug Administration has approved Viagra® tablets containing the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor.
The approval was based on an analysis of data from the study’s 446 participants.
Researchers used the data from the study’s 446 participants to analyze the effects of Viagra and sildenafil on the health of the men in the study who were randomized to take the drug. The study’s results showed that men taking sildenafil experienced a mean increase in blood pressure and a mean decrease in heart rate. The men in the sildenafil group experienced a mean decrease in blood pressure and a mean increase in heart rate compared to men in the placebo group.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra®, was approved by the FDA in 1998.
Researchers also found that sildenafil use did not significantly increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in the study participants.
“To date, there is no evidence that Viagra or sildenafil are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in patients taking the medication,” said Dr. Mark D. Gottlieb, the study’s lead author, in a news release.
The study’s participants who took Viagra and sildenafil were also found to be younger than the participants who received placebo. The men taking the drug had an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, Viagra and sildenafil increased the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in the men who took it compared to those who received placebo. These results suggest that the medication may not be effective in preventing or slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Gottlieb, the study’s lead author, in his announcement, told the news organization that he hopes the findings will help inform the FDA’s approval of sildenafil.
“I would like to see the FDA approve Viagra for use in patients with moderate to severe coronary heart disease who will be at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” he said.
The study is being conducted by the University of California, San Diego’s School of Medicine at San Diego School of Medicine.
About a year ago, the FDA announced that it was approving a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the journal Aging found that about a third of all men who take sildenafil have some form of Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the number of Alzheimer’s disease cases reported in the National Institutes of Health was 1.4 million in 1999, according to the NIH.
As a result, the FDA is allowing the Food and Drug Administration to approve sildenafil for use in patients with moderate to severe coronary heart disease. The drug may be effective in preventing or slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers said they did not conduct a causal relationship between the use of Viagra and the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in the men who took the medication. However, they did note that men taking the medication may not experience the same benefits.
The study did not evaluate the impact of the drug on sexual activity, which is thought to have a greater impact on sexual desire than erections. The men were also given a placebo on an average of four days before the drug was administered.
